Elizabeth Bookwalter
Elizabeth has exclusively practiced family law for seven years. She began practicing collaborative law because she believes it provides a better framework for families to resolve custody, support, and property…
I am licensed as a clinical social worker in DC, Maryland and Virginia, enabling me to work with clients throughout the DMV. I provide a variety of separation and divorce services as well as psychotherapy.
In the separation and divorce arena, I serve as a parent coordinator, mediator and divorce coach. Before becoming a therapist, I practiced law, holding positions in the federal government, a Fortune 500 company and an Am Law 100 firm. I am drawn to the Collaborative model over litigation because of its emphasis on client involvement to create durable outcomes.
In my therapy practice, my focus is to help clients identify and make meaningful changes and improve their lives. I work primarily with older adolescents and adults, including college and graduate students, lawyers, medical professionals, and government and private-sector professionals who hold sensitive positions. I work primarily from a cognitive behavioral (CBT) perspective, and also incorporate elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) into my work. My style is transparent and direct. I find humor can play an important role in the therapeutic process.
