Julia Kirvan, LCSW-C, is a clinical social worker who has worked in the Washington, D.C area for over twenty-five years helping individuals, couples and families. She maintains a private clinical practice in Bethesda, MD where she helps individuals and families address a range of issues, including concerns around anxiety, depression, communication, infidelity, intimacy, parenting concerns and life transitions. A good portion of her practice is dedicated to helping families through the challenges and transitions of separation and divorce. Here she may work as a collaborative divorce coach, child specialist or divorce consultant. She strives to help clients minimize the negative impact of conflict and promote a healthy transition to the post divorce family.
As a divorce coach, she assists individuals in bringing their best selves forward to make agreements that will serve the needs of themselves as well as the entire family. During these difficult times, she helps clients manage complex emotions, identify needs and goals and communicate in a clear and productive manner. In addition, she helps families develop a durable parenting plan that best suits the holistic needs of the children and family.
As a child specialist, she serves as “the voice of the child” in the collaborative process. She meets individually and sometimes together with the child(ren) in the family. Here she gains the perspective of each child in the family while also providing a safe place for children to express themselves, their concerns and any questions they may have. She works collaboratively with the other team members to help make recommendations and advocate on the children’s behalf.
She graduated from the American University with a Bachelor’s of Arts in communication. She received her Master’s degree in social work from The Catholic University of America.
